01 Feb How An Entrepreneur Mixes Business + Pleasure
Well traveled, entrepreneurial and a DIY enthusiast, Blair’s apartment is the perfect balance of quirky and cool. As co-founder of a boutique real estate brokerage, his job often goes beyond the 9-5. Therefore, Blair has created a space that is functional for both work and relaxation.
Why do you do what you do?
After investing in properties myself and dealing with Realtors, I began to notice more and more that the industry itself was lacking innovation. People who were in the market tended to work with their parent’s friend, or someone from high school who happened to have their real estate license. There were very few brokerages that stood out to me – it was either the Re/Maxes or the mom and pop shops. Purchasing or selling a property is one of the biggest decisions you make in life, and I wanted to create a brand with the mass appeal and reputation of an established company combined with personal approach of a small team.
Describe your typical week day.
I’ve always been a systems-oriented person. I have two business partners, but my focus is to streamline the brokerage and ensure everything on both the Realtor and client end runs smoothly. I start every day with a to-do list and a coffee – it helps me to feel more organized and in control of my time right off the bat. Mornings are for recruitment meetings with potential new hires, and afternoons are for strategy planning and meeting with my marketing department. I find evenings a great time to work (especially on my balcony in the summer), so I try and take an hour every night to wrap up projects and plan for the next day.
How do you unwind?
When I’m not working, I’m trying to find inspiration to improve what I do. As a business owner, my day is rarely finished at 5pm so when I take a clean break it’s usually to travel – whether that’s a day trip to Niagara or a weekend in NYC.
Describe the style of your home in three words.
Cozy, unique, modern.
What is your design inspiration?
Converted factory lofts in Brooklyn. I love how unexpected repurposed buildings are – a reminder to never judge a book by its cover!
What do you love most about your home?
I love the exposed brick because it gives my space such character, as well as the open concept layout. It’s great for entertaining and the ample counter space in the kitchen area doubles as a desk when I’m working from home.
